The Nieuwstraat
(gemeente Kerkrade / NL) and the Neustrasse
(Herzogenrath / DE) [="newstreet"]
The invisible border in the middle of the street. |
 |
We are on the Dutch
side: green telephone box of Holland's national telecom
provider and grey-rose telephone box of the German
telecom opposite the street. |
 |
The 'Media-Markt'
(=German electronics-store chain) in Herzogenrath (D)
photographed from the Dutch side. |

namebord (blue) and German street name bord (white) |

 |
Last year new street
name signs were placed showing both names of the street
on both sides; this to stress the friendship and close
relationship.
In the past each side had its own national sign: blue in
Holland, white on the German side. |
 |
Dutch side:
Street name sign with 'new street' and Dutch name for a
side street pointing into Dutch territory. |
 |
Picture "2"
(above) was taken on the Dutch side, this is the same
view from the opposite of the street, now with the German
phone booth in the foreground, and the Dutch greenish one
in the background. Phoning accross the street is an
international call! |
 |
Due to fresh new
pavement of the road, it's virtually impossible to
determine where the exact border is.
Worse: the Dutch street post sign is on the German side
of the street.
For those with good eyes and imagination: observe the
German (yellow) long distance street sign post in the
background far right. |

pointing into German territory. |
 |
Until a few
years ago a concrete "mini-wall" of approx. one
foot high divided the Neustrasse from Nieuwstraat.
Meaning in fact two streets next to each other in both
directions.
As a memorial some bricks from this mini-wall were placed
on this roundabout.
The street nowadays seems narrower due to trees planted
in front of the houses. |
